Richard Liu of the JD.com Group

Richard Liu Qiangdong is the founder and chairman of the JD.com Group, one of China’s largest e-commerce companies. Liu started his business with just a few hundred US dollars and wants to build a career in eCommerce. Today, Liu Qiangdong is respected as one of the world’s most outstanding entrepreneurs.

Liu graduated from Nankai University in Tianjin, China, in 1985 with a degree in economics. As an undergraduate student, he taught English at a local middle school during 1989-1990 and participated on the committee for financing the city construction project during 1990-1992. Richard Liu earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1992 and was awarded their “Entrepreneurial Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement” in 1993.

His early years as an entrepreneur were filled with challenges and sacrifices, but he did not give up on his dreams. He and some of his classmates started a business in 1993 by importing and exporting Chinese goods to North America, Europe, and Australia. Richard spent eleven years building up this business, but the market was too small for the competition, which led him to close the business. In 2004, 33-year-old Richard Liu co-founded JD.com (at the time known as 360buy), one of China’s largest eCommerce companies.

JD.com differs from other e-commerce companies such as Taobao or Alibaba because they are known more for copycat brands while JD sells authentic products. JD.com has built up a strong brand with the help of its own exclusive branded products, which are primarily based on traditional Chinese cultural elements.

In 2009, JD.com was listed on NASDAQ in the United States, becoming China’s first public company to list overseas. It has since been listed under its name on several US stock exchanges, including NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ. The most significant transaction for JD.com at that time was acquiring two Internet sites in the UK for £600 million.

Liu is known for his sharp business strategies and innovative ideas. His company was awarded Crain’s “Best Global E-commerce Startup” in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Achievements. Refer to this page for additional information.
