Human Rights Foundation (HRF) founder, Thor Halvorssen has a long history of activism and has become one of the most recognizable fighters for human rights around the globe. Given his family tree, it is no wonder that Halvorssen has gravitated towards activism.

Thor Halvorssen was born in Venezuela to activists parents. But his activist lineage goes back even further. His paternal grandfather was a council to the King of Norway in Venezuela during WW II and reportedly got into an altercation with a few Nazis during his tenure.

His mother is a direct descendant of the first president of Venezuela as well as Simon Bolivar, the military leader who helped Venezuela gain its independence from Spain.

The Halvorssen clan has been fighting tyrants and dictators for generations. And they have paid the price for dissent. Halvorssen’s father was thrown in prison after exposing corruption in the Venezuelan government. His mother was shot during an anti-Chavez rally. Even his cousin, Leopoldo Lopez, is being held as a political prisoner for standing up to Hugo Chavez, the one-time despotic president of Venezuela.

Thor Halvorssen is no stranger to governmental persecution and violence. He has repeatedly been detained and roughed up by law enforcement in several countries. Most recently, he was detained and searched after interviewing ThichQuang Do, the leader of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam. Do has been under house arrest for 28 years as the government has banned the church.

Halvorssen was arrested and “aggressively” interviewed until he convinced authorities that he was merely a Buddhist convert who was only seeking spiritual instruction from Do.While so many activists today are content with signing an online petition and sharing a hashtag on social media, it is Halvorssen and HRF who are getting their hands dirty, bringing the fight directly to tyrants and dictators all over the world.

Halvorssen founded HRF in 2005 and has been guiding it to fight for the rights of citizens all over the world. Their main focus has always been to protect and promote human rights for every person, with a special focus on closed societies like North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan.

He said that he plans to make hundreds of calls of a similar nature. Before “ending” the call, Kesh requested Geraghty to give him the details of a contact person in the organization. Geraghty was astonished by the revelation that a group of men were planning to use her identity as an entry point to infiltrate the organization she served diligently. To counteract the plan, she quickly forwarded the voicemail to Chris Stone, who is the president of the organization. Chris ridiculed O’Keefe’s attempt as an underhand tactic and scam designed to denigrate Dana Geraghty and the Open Society Foundations. The Human Rights Foundation was founded by Thor Halvorssen to address issues of human rights around the world. Thor unfortunately brings personal experience to the field where he is often sought out by news sources around the world. His family has had their human rights violated by the Venezuelan government.
Thor started out as a student activist while studying in England. The issue that he chose to speak out on at that time was South African apartheid. Now, thoughts of people that have their rights violated around the globe are seldom far from his mind. One issue that greatly concerns Thor is child slavery.

Two the countries where child labor is most prevalent are Ghana and the Ivory Coast where children are used to harvest cocoa and manufacture chocolate candy bars. It is estimated that almost 500,000 children are employed in the fields and many more in factories. It is estimated that over 95,000 children are working in Ghana where children as young as five may cut grass with a machete. Many people believe that if they buy a candy bar that is marked for fair trade, then a child slave is not involved in its production. Unfortunately, children can still be used in its production after the cocoa has been harvested. Additionally, many girls are given into slavery in Ghana so that religious leaders will forgive their sins.
Another country where child slavery is a huge problem is in mining where children often have to work 24 hour shifts. This problem particularly exists in Ghana, Niger, Peru and Tanzania. In many areas, these workers are girls because they have no cultural value. Their work is seen as helping their family make a meager living. While international laws now exist making buying gemstones from mines against the law, many children work in small mining operations that governments choose to ignore.
Another area where child labor is a huge problem is in Middle Eastern countries where children are used as camel jockeys. One place where this exist is in the United Arab Emirates where children as young as two are often sold into slavery. The owners then take steps to stunt the baby’s growth. In order to escape international attention, press is always focused on the winning camels. Unlike horse racing, in camel racing each camel does not have to carry the same amount of weight. Therefore, the camel carrying the lightest weight has an advantage.
