Newark MMORPG Examiner: Star Trek Online is going to rock your worldsJust in case you were worried that you weren't nerd enough, Cryptic Studios is putting out a Star Trek MMORPG. Star Trek Online is threatening to make me want to call my best friend "Number One" and start shrieking at people to beam me somewhere. I'll also start dressing anyone I consider expendable in red shirts.
Anyway, Star Trek Online is due out sometime in 2010. GameSpot has an awesome trailer here. (Oh, listen to the voice-over guy's huge vocal change around 1:03; it made me crack the hell up.) The space battle graphics look incredible--but I'm a little confused as to why the human/alien race models appear so awkward. It's almost like Cryptic put all their effort into the ships and locales, then got to the races and half-assed it.
Really, though, I feel that this game is going to be pretty amazing. You'll be able to customize your own race, or play as one of the pre-existing cultures. (Klingon FTW!) You can have epic battles in space, ship versus ship, or you can beam down to planets and have your crew duke it out face-to-face with the hostiles. Personally, I'll be setting my phasers from "stun" to "turn into pile of goo" when exploring new worlds.
Interestingly enough, this game is going to be available on both the XBox 360 and on PC. I'm curious to see how the interface of an actual MMO works on the 360, as I'd be worried that the controller might be clunkier than using a mouse.
I'm very excited for this game, so I'll keep you posted with more details as they become available.
