Just in case you were worried that you weren't nerd enough, Cryptic Studios is putting out a Star Trek MMORPG. Star Trek Online is threatening to make me want to call my best friend "Number One" and start shrieking at people to beam me somewhere. I'll also start dressing anyone I consider expendable in red shirts.

Anyway, Star Trek Online is due out sometime in 2010. GameSpot has an awesome trailer here. (Oh, listen to the voice-over guy's huge vocal change around 1:03; it made me crack the hell up.) The space battle graphics look incredible--but I'm a little confused as to why the human/alien race models appear so awkward. It's almost like Cryptic put all their effort into the ships and locales, then got to the races and half-assed it.

Really, though, I feel that this game is going to be pretty amazing. You'll be able to customize your own race, or play as one of the pre-existing cultures. (Klingon FTW!) You can have epic battles in space, ship versus ship, or you can beam down to planets and have your crew duke it out face-to-face with the hostiles. Personally, I'll be setting my phasers from "stun" to "turn into pile of goo" when exploring new worlds.

Interestingly enough, this game is going to be available on both the XBox 360 and on PC. I'm curious to see how the interface of an actual MMO works on the 360, as I'd be worried that the controller might be clunkier than using a mouse.

I'm very excited for this game, so I'll keep you posted with more details as they become available.

Researchers ranging from psychologists to epidemiologists have wondered for some time whether online, multiplayer games might provide some ways to test concepts that are otherwise difficult to track in the real world. A Saturday morning session at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science described what might be the most likely way of finding out. With the cooperation of Sony, a collaborative group of academic researchers at a number of institutions have obtained the complete server logs from the company's Everquest 2 MMORPG.

Study discovers that SOE could give a rats ass about their customers' privacy rights, and EQ2 players are ~31 years old, nearly half of them are ugly, old, fat, depressed, alcoholic women (40%), the remaining 60% are depressed, drug abusing alcoholic, men who are also fat.

This fits my stereotypical view of an EQ2 player to a fucking T.

Now, what would happen if they studied the population of a successful MMRPG rather than a failed one? For example, I doubt the World of Warcraft customer base is made up of fat, depressed, substance abusing, people.

Oh wait, Blizzard cares about their customers privacy.... Never mind.

This week, police in Pennsylvania arrested a 23 year old man for engaging in an indecent and illegal relationship with a 14 year old girl after the two met in the online game World of Warcraft. Has this online world become a new sexual stalking ground?
